Explore They grow outside, need sunlight to survive, and are green. In class we have figure out that the need CO2 and H2O. They give off sugar and oxygen which we need to survive. What effects the photosynthesis?
Research Question We're testing to see if changing the solution to salt or sugar for the spinach leaves will affect the rate of photosynthesis. We wanted to see if salt and sugar could change how many spinach disks floats up or sink during photosynthesis.
Predictions We think that the different solution won't affect the rate of photosynthesis because the plants don't use either sugar or salt for photosynthesis.
Experimental Design We cut out 10 spinach leaf discs and put them in a syringe as a vacuum then waited for them to sink. We then put them in 100 ml water with .5g of baking soda in it. We stirred the solution and recorded the amount of discs floating every minute. Next we did the same thing except we added .5g of salt to the solution. Then we added .5g of sugar to a different cup with .5 baking soda and 100ml of water. We did three trials of each solution.
Conclusion Added sugar or salt to the solution sped up the rate of photosynthesis. Salt increased the rate of photosynthesis more than the sugar.
