Explore Some plants are dangerous to humans Plants use photosynthesis to make food Plants are green because of chlorophyll
Research Question Will adding salt water to heterozygous offspring change the phenotypic ratio from the original ratio of 9:3:3:1.
Predictions The plants will not grow because the salt water will dehydrate the plant causing no growth in the plants.
Experimental Design We are going to water the plants for two weeks with salt water and then record the data we see throughout the two weeks. We will water each plant with ten milliliters of water every other day and record the phenotypes of each plant and if the phenotypes change because of the salt water. The variables we will keep the same is the amount of water each plants get, the type of plant, the soil that the plant is planted in, and the environment.
Conclusion Our conclusion at the end of the experiment is that salt water does not give the nutrients needed for the plants to grow. Our explanation for these results is that the plant seeds are not accommodated for this type of water with this high of sodium levels and in turn dehydrated the plant and caused it not to grow. The data we collected supports our reasoning because the plants did not grow at all and showed no phenotypic ratio. We suggest that the future experiments that could be done should be done with plants that are used to getting salt water to show if plants can grow at all when receiving salt water. This would widen the experiment not just to a specific type of plant but to all plants in general and could show more insight to if salt water changes phenotypic ratios. This applies to everyday science life in the real world because we are running our of fresh water. So when it becomes scarce we will have to use other water to give to plants. This could change the phenotypic ratio but most likely will cause the plants not to grow and cause mass famine to occur. So knowing this, we would have to find another way to water plants sense this experiment shows that plants that are not accommodated for salt water will not grow with this kind of water. That is what we learned in our experiment and what are explanation is for our results.
