Explore | Does changing the temperature change the speed of germination. Does depth of the seed change the shape or pattern of growth. We will pick one of these questions to test and study. |

Research Question | Does Marion mi garden soil need fertilizer to have a better germination rate. |
Predictions | We believe that the soil with Burpee seed starting mix(fertilizer) will have a better germination rate. |
Experimental Design | We will have two pots of Marion Mi garden soil and two pots of Marion Mi garden soil with Burpee seed starting mix. Both pots have 5 seeds in them. Then see which one will have a better germination rate. We will also water them in on first three days then leave them for three day and then water... |
Conclusion | Over the 8 days we have been testing Does Marion mi garden soil need fertilizer to have a better germination rate. In the 8 days we have had 4 plants germinate out of the 10 in Marion mi garden soil with fertilizer and 2 plants out of the 10 in just Marion mi soil. This data lets us prove that... |

Updates
i was sick on thursday and friday so i never got to say what i wanted to say. I may be a villain but i would like to say thank you for your help
Tabby, I hope you do feel better now. Thanks for your warm message! Have a wonderful Spring!
Team,
Well-done! I hope you all enjoyed this team investigation so far! Some comments on your project info/conclusion:
- "This data lets us prove that Marion mi soil needs fertilizer to improve the germination rate of the plants." --> Although this seems to follow what you expect/hypothesis, I would avoid the term 'prove'. Rather, this finding 'support' your hypothesis that soils with fertilizer will give higher germination rate.
- "During this experiment we have picked up more questions than answers like is Marion mi soil the same all around this test may continue for future experiments this was only the tip of the iceberg." --> Exactly! This is how scientists move the research forward. We do experiments, observe carefully, and note down our findings. Later, we see more questions that need to be answered! This never-ending process keep us active and it's fun to do sciences!
Have a wonderful Spring!

hello this is our last day of the project we all would like to thank you for all the help you have done getting our project started and done this is for my whole group thanks -Weston, Wesley,Tabby, and Robert.
thanks again
I hope you all had a great learning experience! Feel free to let me know if any question arises! Well-done!
this is wesley are plants are growing well
My name is Tabby.I enjoy playing video games and have really good grades in marion high school.
Hi Tabby, I'm sure you do! What is your favorite subject(s) at school and why?
my favorite subjects are science and study skills. P.S I enjoy being called Lord Tabby if you like.
also when i said you can call me Lord Tabby. You might ask if i'm a villain or not.I'm just going to give the answer, yes i am a villain but i'm not that mean.
Lord Tabby, a good villain, based on your favorite subjects, can you please tell me what kind of study skills would be useful to get this project done?
my study skills class is actually a class where i catch up on any missing work in my school.
It's great to hear that the project is going well as planned. Please keep me updated!! Take a lot of photos!! And lastly, don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions!
Cheers

Its time to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty! :)
We have chose to test the question does changing soil effect the percent of seeds that grow.
- Why should we care about soil? Why is soil important? How might soil affect seed germination?
- How does your 'Marion mi garden soil' or 'Burpee seed starting mix' look like? Let's make some observations. For example, what are some visible characteristics of the soil? What are some differences/similarities between the two soils? Hint: You may check what is written on the soil bag, if there is any.
- How would the characteristics in 2. influence the 'functions' of soil in regard to promoting seed germination?
- How can you test your question "Does Marion mi garden soil need Burpee seed starting mix to have a better germination rate." ? When you say 'NEED', does this mean 'necessary' or you also suggest 'quantitative' responses? For instance, addition of ANY amount of Burpee seed starting mix can improve the germination rate. On the other hand, it might be that germination rate varies based on HOW MUCH Burpee seed starting mix you add into the pot!
- If you want to test whether 'Marion mi garden soil OR Burpee seed starting mix will give a higher germination rate', then your current experiment design would fit well. Why would you be interested in testing this question? How are these two soils differ that might affect seed germination? (See your answer to the first set of questions)
A great start! A bit long response from me below. But let's try to answer each of the following questions before we move on! Keep up the good work!
I see that your current research question is "Does Marion mi garden soil need Burpee seed starting mix to have a better germination rate."
Part 1
Let's think about/try to clarify the following points:
Part 2
It seems to me that you want to see if the addition of Burpee seed starting mix to Marion mi garden soil will increase or decrease seed germination. But can your proposed experiment answer this question?
The current experiment design seems to explore whether Marion mi garden soil OR Burpee seed starting mix will give a higher germination rate. Would you be interested in testing this?
Ultimately, we can make changes to either our question or the approach. But before we do that, let's consider the following points.
Some more advanced questions:
Please let me know what you come up with, or if you have any further questions! Enjoy the investigation :)
Cheers
Your mentor has some great questions to consider!
Dig in! :)

hi my name is wesley i live in marion michgan and i am the data manger
Hi Wesley! Sounds like you have something fun to work on during the next couple of weeks! What kind of skills you think would be useful to have as a data manager? How can we efficiently manage our experiment data?
this is what we will be investigating. Does changing the soil effect the percentage of seed that germinate. Does changing the temperature change the speed of germination. Does depth of the seed change the shape or pattern of growth. We will pick one of these questions to test and study. We might use buckwheat as the plant for study.
- WHY are you interested in soil/temperature/seed sowing depth? Why is soil/temperature/seed sowing depth important during seed germination?
- Why would you choose buck wheat to study the effect of the factors mentioned above?
Sounds interesting!
Some questions from me:
All of these factors sound great! Any choice you make is okay :) In term of practicality, which one of them would be easy to conduct an experiment on in your classroom? You may discuss this with your teacher!
My name is Weston I go to Marion high school. My favorite subject is science. we will be working with you in are science assignment.
Hi Weston!, Science is super fun! Which topic you are most interested in? It's my pleasure to be working with you guys. Looking forward to sharing ideas and enjoying this learning process with you all!
hello my name is Robert c im a student at the marion high school in michigan and we may be working on wheat
Hi Robert! Sounds exciting. Why would you be interested in using wheat in your experiment? Do you consider other plants as well?
Hi team,
My name is Pornpipat. I'm a PhD student at UC Davis, California! I'm currently working on wheat (yes! the one your bread is made of). I aim to breed wheat with improved nutritional values under environments anticipated in the near future. Apart from science, I enjoy watching movies and hiking!
Have fun with the modules and don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions! I'm looking forward to enjoying the project with you all :)
Cheers
