Profile

  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    Florida State University

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I am interested generally in evolution and how new species are formed. Currently I work on how evolution proceeds following gene duplication such as in polyploidization, how that proceeds in independent lineages, and how that can create new species due to differences in compatabilites.

  • Profile Question 1
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
Discovering the confluence of your own interests and that of the budding scientific field. Then, using those interests to uncover a mystery of the natural world that no one has discovered but you.

  • Profile Question 2
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
Try out as many different fields as you can and don't be afraid to switch your path. Science encompasses so many different and nuanced fields that can be so interesting! Don't be discouraged when one doesn't interest you. Find another.

  • Profile Question 3
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
Orchids. They are masters of manipulation and co-evolution--not to mention their amazing diversity and stark beauty.

  • Availability
I am NOT available, please temporarily remove me from the available mentor list
