SESSION 4

Session 4 Focus Question: How can we engage students in making explicit links between science ideas and activities?

Prework

  • Begin Mentor-Student interactions model by developing an independent research question and protocol for an independent investigation, posting updates to the updates feed on the Project team page (Teachers) and providing feedback through the Project team forum (Scientists)

  • Read and analyze the Case study assigned to your team.

  • Add to the Goals and Roles Jamboard (Scientists only)

  • Complete the Meta Moment

Post responses below to the following discussion forums:

  • Discussion Board Posts This link takes you directly to the Discussion Post page for Session 3

    • S3-Post #1: What alternative plant systems have you used or would you use for investigating photosynthesis and success levels (or not)? Post only - no responses required (15 min)

    • S3-Post #2: How might you adapt the guided investigations for your class? Post initial thoughts. Responses to colleagues are optional.

    • S3-Post #3 How might the Power of Sunlight Module fit into your curriculum? Post initial thoughts. Responses to colleagues are optional.

Session Agenda and Resources

Asynchronous Tasks

TEACHERS

  • Conduct your independent research investigations.

  • Post regularly to your team page's update feed with updates and observations you make along the way.

    • Upload photos if possible (Use 'Files' on the left side menu.  The photos will appear in the feed.)

    • You can also upload files depicting charts and graphs to this area as well.

  • Remember to read and respond to your mentors' posts and to continue to update the Info fields at the top of your Project page.
  • Create your poster for your independent investigation on your Team's Frame on the Session 4 Jamboard (see instructions on Frame 5)
  • Posters for your investigations should include:
    Research question
    Procedure
    Results
    Explanation, including C-E-R
    • Consider our discussion of explanations, argumentation, and C-E-R:
      • Dis you include your question and claim that answered the question
      • Did you use evidence from your investigation to support your claim
      • Did you include relevant science ideas to support your claim?

You’ll present your posters
Have time for questions from your peers
Argumentation!

SCIENTISTS

INDIVIDUAL TASKS

  • Complete the Meta Moment (5 min): Reflect in your journal.

    • What did you learn?

    • How did you learn it?

    • What do you want to be sure to remember as you implement the module?

    • Revisit your initial response to the focus question: How do we engage students to make explicit links between science ideas and activities?
