Session 1 Focus Question: How can we engage students in making sense of phenomena?

Please complete the following tasks prior to the first session of the institute on June 26, 2023.

TEAM TASKS:

Prior to the next session, complete the  following activities:

  • Team Investigation (65 min)

Conduct the experiment for the Hands on with the Power of Sunlight activity: Spinach Leaf Disk Investigation

  • Read through the entire procedure (Steps 4-19) before beginning. (SG p 13 - 17)

  • Conduct your experiment and collect your data. 

  • For the purpose of this workshop, we recommend 

    • that you work in groups of 2-3 (2 setups per team)

    • that everyone tries to do the leaf disk infiltration to become more comfortable with it. 

  • Once you complete the investigation, work with your team members to complete the questions in Step 20.

  • You will decide whether to do this investigation individually or simultaneously with your teammates in the asynchronous zoom room.

  • We have allotted 65 minutes for you to complete this investigation including the time to answer and discuss the questions in step 20 with your teammates. 

INDIVIDUAL TASKS

  • STeLLA Strategies (20 min)
    Read the descriptions for STeLLA Strategies1, 2, and 3 and complete the purpose and key features sections of the strategies chart. (see links above in the resources section)

  • Complete the Session 1 Meta Moment (5 min)
    Reflect on today’s learning experiences in your journal:

    • What did you learn?

    • How did you learn it?

    • What do you want to be sure to remember as you implement the module?

    • Revisit your initial response to the focus question: How do we engage students in making sense of phenomena?

  • Add questions to the Park Bench as needed
