Plants do not need soil to germinate, only light and water. We know they have their own food (starch in the embryo). They feed off that until they run out and from there they need soil to absorb water and minerals. As it grows they take in carbon dioxide to go through primary and secondary growth. They produce oxygen and withhold the carbon to grow in girth. |
Research Question |
We would like to test what color of light the seeds best germinate under. We know that seeds absorb light at different wavelengths. |
Predictions |
Using red, purple, white, and green light we think the seeds will best germinate under red light because our previous knowledge tells us they absorb warmer color wavelengths better. |
Experimental Design |
Our plan is to place four spinach seeds in two petri dishes (with a base of a wet paper towel) that will be set under four different color lights (eight seeds total under each light). The variables that will stay constant are temperature, exposure to light, amount of water added, number of seeds in each dish, location, and paper towel used. The only variable being tested is the color of light used. We will measure each week which petri dish has the most germinated seeds by recording them on paper with the date. |
