Explore The things that I know about Japanese beetles is that they attack trees and plants with big leaves or anything that is sweet. Also, Japanese beetles are very effective to plants and trees. There are a few reasons that they are effective to plants and trees because they are attracted to their sweet smell and they love it. There are ways to keep Japanese beetles off your trees and plants, you will need to spray them with a specific spray and they will eat it and they should die, but they don’t always. There are some things that you can get and if you spray them on your trees and plants twice a summer they will kill as soon as they touch it or land on it. This kills the Japanese beetles immediately and you won’t have to worry about them killing your plants.
Research Question Our overall question is which insect causes the most harm to trees? We’ve decided to look into the harm caused by the Japanese beetles. Also, we’re sticking to a more specific area. So, really, our question is how much harm do Japanese beetles cause to trees in Missouri. Originally, we came up with this question because we were curious how insects affected different plants and trees. This relates to the topic because insects carry diseases to different trees. Also, insects themselves sometimes cause harm to trees.
Predictions I think Crape Myrtle trees will be the most damaged by Japanese beetles because they have bright colors and Japanese beetles favor them. We will know if they have been damaged if there are holes in the leaves around the veins.
Experimental Design We are going to test how Japanese beetles affect trees and what trees they affect. Due to the weather and time of year we will be looking at historical records to find what trees the beetles prefer and what damage they cause.
