They make their own food, and we use them as food. They also do photosynthesis and cellular respiration. |
Research Question |
How does certain types of lights(LED or iridescent) effect the disks and baking soda solution? We want to know what light is the best to use when growing plants in a house or lab. we know that plants will do photosynthesis under lights but it's good to know which one has more of an effect. |
Predictions |
We think that the iridescent lights will have more of an effect because the light is more like the natural sun that plants usually grow under. we believe that the plants will rise at the same rate as our past experiment. |
Experimental Design |
Take 3 to 5 spinach leaves and cut out disks from them. Fill two different cups with 3 cm of water and 2 grams of baking soda. Without touching the disks put them into two different syringes (10 to 12 in each). Fill the syringes with each cup of solution (to the #7 mark) then get the air out of the syringe and make sure the disks sink to the bottom of the syringe. Transfer the disks into the cup at the same time and put the cups under the two separate lights( LED and iridescent) at the same time as well. Keep the cups under the light until 15 minutes or all the disks are floating. Record data for how many leaves are floating at the end of every minute. |
