I grow crops with my Grandpa, Abigail and me have discovered a lot more about photosynthesis as a whole. We wanted to do this experiment because we were both curious about if a greenhouse affects the rate of photosynthesis (leave color and size) and we wanted to know if there will be a difference in the Photosynthesis and the Cellular Respiration between Store bought Spinach and Home grown Spinach. (Walmart grows all spinach in a greenhouse, Emori's grandfather does not own a greenhouse) Photosynthesis relates to growing crops by growth rate, it will grow more if photosynthesis occurs frequently. |
Research Question |
The Question; Does the difference between store bought and home grown spinach leaves affect Photosynthesis? It fits because it deals with photosynthesis and cellular respiration. I believe that store bought spinach will last longer due to environment, and artificialness. Home grown will wilt quickly. |
Predictions |
Home grown spinach does not need anything to help it grow. |
Experimental Design |
1. Use a hole puncher to punch 30 spinach discs.
2. Poor 100mL of water into to beakers.
3. Add a 1/8 of a teaspoon of Baking Soda into the water.
4. Add 15 spinach discs into 2 syringes.
5. Add water to each syringes.
6. Perform leaf infiltration.
7. Poor the water and leaves from the syringe into the beaker.
8. Start a timer for 20 mins.
9. Put the LED light over the beakers.
10. Watch and log your data every min. |
Conclusion |
When we did the experiment we noticed that the Store bought Spinach had a higher rate of photosynthesis than the Home Grown spinach. We think the reason this happened was because the Store Bought spinach was darker than the Home Grown spinach. Another thought we had as the Store Bought spinach is grown in a greenhouse and is watered by the hour and kept at a certain temp. Emori's grandpa doesn't have a certain watering time, doesn't keep his plants in a greenhouse, and they grown with the temp. that is outside. |
