Research Question If we use the blue light it will help the radish plant grow the most.
Predictions Our hypothesis is If we use the blue light it will help the radish plant grow the most. Based on our experiment, the data shows that our hypothesis was incorrect.
Experimental Design 1. In all 4 Seed trays, use a shovel to put soil in each of the sections, so the soil is filled a little more then half way. 2. Then with your finger, or using a seed stick, make a small hole in each section in all of the seed trays that a seed can fit into. Make a hole in the middle of the section that goes all the way to the bottom of the seed tray. 3. Put one radish seed in each section in all 4 Seed trays, there are 48 sections, 12 sections per each seed tray. 4. Using the soil already in the seed tray, gently cover all 48 seeds with soil so the seed is not visible, and the stem of the plant is poking up. 5. Place 1 Seed tray under each colored light. 1 under Blue, Red, Pink, one under the control which is Sunlight. 6. Turn on all 4 lights to the corresponding colors, Blue, Red, Pink, & Sunlight. There should only be one of each color, no more no less. 7. For sunlight, place the seed tray next to a window where it can get sunlight. 8. Keep all colored lights on from 7:30am-3:00pm every day, which is 7 hours & 30 minutes. 9. Water all 48 seeds 3-5 ml per seed every day. 10. Once a day, measure the height of each seed and record observation. 11. Find the average of the 12 seeds per container every day. Measure the groups separate so you find the average of each colored light group.
Conclusion The purpose of the experiment was to find out if blue light helped the radish plants grow more than the other lights, pink, red, and sunlight. Since sunlight is important to plant growth, we wanted to experiment with different colored lights to see if different colored lights affect plant growth. . By conducting this experiment, the results showed that our hypothesis, blue light will help the radish plant grow the most, was not supported. . Based on the average plant height from the 4th day (last day), the radish plant growing under red light has the tallest average. Blue light with an average of 8.99, and red light was 11.52. That is a difference of 2.53. The other radish plant averages are 9.73 for pink light, and 8.47 for sunlight. The Experiment could be improved by making sure the colored lights are the only source of light. While the colored lights were on, the classroom lights were on as well, almost directly shining on the plants. We could also experiment using two different seeds under the same light. By doing this, we would find out if red light is the best for all plants, or specific plants. There are other experiments that could continue to study plant growth using different colored lights. The experiments could use different seeds like corn, and use other lights like violet and green. The graph showing the data from the 4th day, (last day) is below.
