From experience with plants out and inside of school we know plants need specific conditions to grow, and create their own food in the form of sugars. We are interested in finding out if adding sugar to the water and soil will improve or hinder the plant in any way. |
Research Question |
How do different levels of sugar in a water solution affect the germination of a plant. |
Predictions |
We predict that the plants will grow more efficiently with added sugar. |
Experimental Design |
We took a planter box that had circular dirt pods (about 1 inch thick) and planted our corn seeds in 4 rows of 6 seeds for our 4 concentrations of sugar water being 0%, 10%, 25%, and 50% sugar. After a few days the pods grew fungus due to watering them 10ml a day which led to over watering so we moved them to 8 cups of dirt. Each sugar concentration had 2 cups with 3 seeds each which we watered 20ml a day. The variables we keep constant are the amount of sugar in the water, and the water they receive each day. When the plant begin to grow we will measure their height of the plant with respect to how much sugar is in it's water solution. |
