Explore For the plant to grow as a seed it needs water, a good location, and also the right temperature. Germination is when the seed starts growing. The little white root is the first thing to grow from the seed. Then the stem starts to grow and it sprouts out of the dirt. Cellular respiration is what the seed uses to grow at first to break down the food that is stored in the seed. The plant starts to photosynthesize once it has leaves. For our project we're using a mustard seed. Mustard seed takes 80 to 90 days to grow.
Research Question How does the amount of light affect the plants growth.
Predictions The one in the sun the whole day will grow the most and the one in the one in the sun for part of the day ith grow a little bit and the one in the shade will grow the least.
Experimental Design 1: Put a damp paper towel in the bottom of a petri dish (x4) 2: Put 1 tablespoon of water in the dish each day. 3: Put 4 mustard seeds in each dish. 4: Two dishes stay in light for 8 hours a day. The other two stay out of the light. 5: Track the growth(height and width) during 4th hour each day.
Conclusion Claim: If we put some seeds in the shade and take away light then the plants in the shade will grow more. Evidence: The plants in the shade grew longer than the seeds in the light but they were white and yellow. The seeds in the light grew greener stronger leaves and roots. All of the seeds in the shade were germinated by the second day. For the ones in the light, it took them 3 days to all germinate. Reasoning: Mustard seeds are partial shade seeds which means that they can survive in the shade with little amounts of light. Even though the seeds in the darkness grew more and taller they were still white and yellow because they didn’t have any light to help them make glucose to grow green leaves that were strong and big. The Seeds in the light didn’t have as long of roots or stalks but they have greener roots and they have greener leaves. I think if we put some seeds in the light and in the dark half and half they would grow the most.
