We know the seed needs water, CO2, sunlight, and a place to grow. We know that it performs Photosythesis and Cellular respiration. In order to do PHT the plant needs water, Co2, and sunlight, when the process of PHT is done it creates O2 and Glucose. The O2 and Glucose is then used to do cellular respiration which releses ATP energy, Co2, and water. |
Research Question |
How does food coloring effect plant growth? |
Predictions |
We believe the food dye will change the color of the plant and or kill it from the chemicals. We believe this because we’ve seen food dye change the color of already grown plants. We believe it might kill it because of the high concentration of chemicals. |
Experimental Design |
We will have 3 plastic bags each, 3 corn seeds in each bag with the different concentrations of food dye. One bag with 0 drops of food dye, one bag with 5 drops and one bag with 10 drops. The food dye is going into the 10 ml of water that we are putting in the bag everyday. The corn seeds will be in between paper towel, in the plastic bags. They will be in a room temperature place on a window sill. We will mesure how much the plant grows in 5 days in centametures. |
Conclusion |
The amount of food dye in water does affect overall plant growth. When the water had 10 drops of food dye it grew significantly less than the water with 0 drops, the range between the groth was 10 cm. The tallest plant with 10 drops grew 1 cm and the tallest plant with 0 drops grew 11 cm. The tallest plant with 5 drops was 4 cm. This is because of the chemical Carotienoids. Caroteniod Is the highest concentration ingredient in food dye, especially red dye. Carotenoid isnt highly deadly but if its ingested in high conecentrations over a long period of time it can kill humans or plants. Sense plants are so small it only took a week and 10 drops of dye, to kill a human you would have to injest a bottle of food dye a day for a month straight. I belive this was a fair test because everything was equal and there where no huge errors/ mistakes. |
