I know that seeds need water and proper temperature to germinate. |
Research Question |
How does the color of the seed affect how the speed of germination? |
Predictions |
If we have 4 different colors of seeds then the yellow seed will germinate faster than the others. |
Experimental Design |
Step 1: Set up 4 bags with 10 of each color (purple, orange, yellow, red) zea mays corn seeds.
Step 2: Put 5-10 ml of water on the paper towel. Seal the seeds in the bag on top of the paper towel.
Step 3: Measure how long it takes to come out of the seed
Step 4: Measure how long the roots are.
Step 5: Observe the seeds once every day of the week. |
Conclusion |
The red seed grew the most at 24 cm, and the other seeds all grew to about 14-16 cm. Color of seeds depends on beta-carotene, anthocyanins, and flavonoids. Corn seeds also get their color from DNA. Each seed gets their color from random assortment. However, there is no research that would prove that red would grow the fastest, so my conclusion is that it was purely coincidental that the red seed grew the most, or maybe the color of the seed doesn’t really affect germination at all. |
