Explore Most plants come from seeds, most plants are green, and seeds/plants don't always need soil to germinate.
Research Question How does changing the temperature affect how slow the seed germinates.
Predictions If we make the temperature of the air colder then it will germinate slower.
Experimental Design Materials: refrigerator water heat lamp box cupboard 6 petri dishes 30 corn seeds (5 per dish) Procedure: Step 1: Gather your materials (30 corn seeds, 6 petri dishes, water, heat lamp) Step 2: Set up your seeds: Put a piece of paper towel at the bottom of each petri dish Put 5 corn seeds in each petri dish spaced out evenly Put 5 mL of water in each petri dish Step 3: Start changing the temperature/locations (independent variable) of the surrounding air Close petri dishes and put two petri dishes in a black paper box (to limit sunlight) under a heat lamp and turn on Close petri dishes and put two petri dishes in the refrigerator Close petri dishes and put two petri dishes in cupboard (at room temperature) Step 4: Count the number of seeds that germinate (produce roots and/or stems) each day and record on data table. Of the seeds that have germinated, measure the length of the roots and/or stems in millimeters and record on the data table. Step 5: Repeat step 4 for five days.
Conclusion claim: The corn seeds in the heat lamp grew the longest roots and the fastest compared to the rest. Evidence: The corn seeds in the heat lamp grew the most and the fastest and the ones in the fridge grew the least only 2 of 10 out of all of the seeds in the fridge grew throughout the whole time and all of the 10 corn seeds in heat lamp grew all on the first day. the longest root on the heat lamp was 15cm long and the longest root on the fridge was 2mm long Reasoning: The heat lamp is acting as the heat for the corn seed . Corn seeds need 75-95 degrees so that's why it would have grown so much in the heat lamp instead of the fridge. with the cupboard it was warm enough to grow but not as warm as the heat lamp so it didn't grow as much. the fridge was too cold so i did not germinate really at all so it was the shortest of all of the rest of the seeds.
