Project by group dmssmithwosspring2023

Explore My name is Ayla and I have a somewhat good experience with plants. My grandparents used to have a garden that I helped with almost daily. I also have about 20 plants that I'm pretty good at maintaining. I've also had a few plant-related classes. Hello Devani Jolman, thank you so much for guiding us to learn more about plants! I am Raegan and I am so excited to go through this unit with you! I really like sports and I also love succulent plants. For example I have two cacti. One is small and is in a tiny pot on one of my bedroom shelves. It is in good reach of the sun and I water it every 3 days. I also have another cactus that is quite bigger and sits on a table by my window. I only water it about every Friday and it seems to be alive and healthy. Sometimes I even notice they grow pretty flowers on them that are a light yellow color.Hello Davani Jolman! I am so excited to start this project with you as my mentor and guide. My name is Rielynn and I am a student-athlete at DeWitt Middle school. I enjoy sports such as volleyball basketball and track. I do not have a lot of experience with plants but am excited to learn about them. Some of the plants I have had are succulents, tomato plants, and zucchini plants. My group would like you to know how much we appreciate you taking your time to help us. Thank You! Hi Devani Jolman! My name is Morgan and I am so excited to start this project with you! I'm glad you are my science mentor! I go to DeWitt Middle School and I love sports. I love to play basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, and sometimes golf. I have grown plants in school before with a science mentor and I thought it was really fun. I was happy to hear that I would be doing this again!
Research Question How do different amounts of hydrogen peroxide affect the speed of seed germination?
Predictions If we add hydrogen peroxide when watering the pea seeds, then it will increase plant germination.
Experimental Design first, grab 4 Petri dishes. set down your petri dish on a table in a flat position and place a paper towel that is fit to fit into each dish. place ten seeds into each petri dish close together. mix 3 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide and two cups of water in a separate cup. Take your cup and place it by one of the Petri dishes. take a tablespoon and scoop the hydrogen peroxide mixture into one petri dish. set this petri dish aside grab another petri dish mix 6 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide and 2 cups of water in a separate cup take this cup and place it next to one of the Petrii dishes take a tablespoon and scoop the hydrogen peroxide mixture into the one petri dish. set this petri dish aside grab another petri dish that we prepared mix together 9 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide and 2 cups of water in a separate cup Take your cup and place it by one of the Petri dishes. take a tablespoon and scoop the hydrogen peroxide mixture into one petri dish. set this petri dish aside grab another petri dish get two cups of water into a separate cup and don't mix any hydrogen peroxide place the separate cup by the last petri dish scoop 1 tablespoon of water into the petri dish set the petri dish by the others and under the inqubator light. wait for the seed to germinate while measuring the growth each day and recording it in your science notebook.
Conclusion The higher intensity of hydrogen peroxide the faster germination will happen up to a certain point. The highest intensity of hydrogen peroxide and water did not germinate the fastest this is due to the intensity being too high which caused the hydrogen peroxide to damage the seed making it germinate slower. this supports our claim because the peroxide was too strong and it caused it not to germinate as fast. In future investigations to expand our results we would use a lower concentration of hydrogen peroxide and use different percentages of the peroxide.
