Know: All plants start as seeds, seeds do cellular respiration, plants reproduce.
Questions: do plants just stop growing at a certain point, do some fertilizers kill plants. |
Research Question |
how does the type of liquid affect the germination of a mustard seed? |
Predictions |
If water is best for the plant then the seed will germinate faster. |
Experimental Design |
1.) Get 50 mustered seeds
2.) divide seeds into 10 seeds for 5 people
3.) take 5 paper towels and soak into 5 different liquid
4.} soak one in water
5.) soak another in milk
6.) soak another in coke
7.) soak another in sparkling water
8.) lastly soak one in lemonade
9.) Once all of the paper towels and soaked open up the dish and place the paper towels in the dish
10.) Then place 5 seeds into the dish and close the dish and wait until the seeds germinate. Once one germinates record the data. |
Conclusion |
In our conclusion, all four of us have decided that sparkling water is best for a plant seed's germination. A possible explanation is that the seeds could have absorbed the sparkling water better than any of the other liquids making it germinate quicker. Our first thought was that water would have been best for the plant but sparkling water proved to be best. For future experiments, we could expand the number of tests we did.
Evidence: according to the data I found, sparkling water is best for the mustard seed. On day one sparkling water seeds germinated all 10 seeds, water: 9 seeds germinated, milk: 0 germinated, coke: 0 germinated, and lemonade: 0 germinated. On the last day sparkling water: 10 seeds, water: 10 seeds, milk: 9 seeds, coke: 1 seed, lemonade: 1.
Reasoning: Sparkling water increases how fast the plant germinates. This is because sparkling water has carbon dioxide which is what plants take out of the air and since they can do that they can also do that from water. That is why the germination process Is faster. Also when you add different liquids to a plant it stops the prosses of photosynthesis because water molecules are shaped differently than other liquids. |
