Plants go through a process called photosynthesis, when going through the process of photosynthesis a surgery substance called Glucose is produced as food and is used as energy for the plant. Another material that is produced in this process is O2 or Oxygen. Oxygen is the basic material almost all land animals need to live, without oxygen we wouldn't be able to breathe or live.
One question we is why do plants sprout flowers sometimes? |
Research Question |
How does the amount of sunlight given to a seed affect how long it takes for the seed to germinate? |
Predictions |
If the seed receives more sunlight then it will take less time to germinate. This is because sunlight is the energy the plant uses for photosynthesis. |
Experimental Design |
Procedure: step1: gather your materials (seeds, water, container, paper towel, syringe
Step2: put one square of paper towel in each container
Step3: put your 3 seeds in each container
Step4: Pick your source of light
Step5: Give each container 25 drops of water from the syringe
Step6: Put 3 out of 4 of the container under the light source
Step7: Put foil over the last dish and place it under the light as well.
Step8: Check the first container after 3 hours and take it out of the light
Step9: measure the growth
Step10: Check the seed container with the foil
Step11: Record growth of the seed in the dark seed
Step12:After 8 hours from the original start time take out one seed container from the light
Step13: Record the growth of that seed
Step14: After 24 hours from the original time record the growth of the last container
Step15:Put the other seeds back
Step16: Repeat 6-15 each day for 5 days |
Conclusion |
Claim: The amount of sunlight given to a seed doesn’t affect how long it takes a seed to germinate.
Evidence: I know this to be true because there was only a 1cm difference between a the seed getting 0 and 24 hours. Also when the seed got 0 hours it grew 1.7cm on average. When the seed grew 2.5cm on average, and when it got 8 hours it didn’t grow. Finally when the seed got 24 hours of light it grew 2.7cm on average. As you can see there is no distinct pattern from 0-24 hour of light so it really doesn’t matter.
Reasoning: This happened because most seeds don’t need light to germinate. Also some seeds might even inhibited by light. Most seeed need the right amount of moisture so the seed coat can become soft enough for the sprout to come out. As well as, they also need the right temperature. To add on a seed could germinate in a cave given the right environment. But once seeds sprouts then they need light for energy for photosynthesis. As you can see the amount of light does not affect how long it takes a seed to germinate. I believe that our tset was far because we stated consistent on how long our seeds were in the light. This supports my prier knowledge because i learned that seedlings only need sunlight for photosynthesis. |
