Yesterday, in class, we learned about germination. Germination is when a seed of a plant first sprouts and it's when the stem is visible out of the soil. It is when the seeds start to develop into plants or small structures. Seeds have energy, that is released when they start to take in and have access to sunlight, water, oxygen, soil, and a warm temperature. |
Research Question |
Does sand mixed with soil effect the process of germination? |
Predictions |
If we mix sand and soil together, then the process of germination would move slower. This will happen because sand is dry and doesn't have enough nutrients for the plant to grow. It will grow faster in the bottle with just the fertilized soil. We think this because it has vitamins and nutrients. |
Experimental Design |
1) Fill one 20oz bottle half way with soil
2) Fill the second 20oz bottle 25% soil and 25% sand
3) place 5 soybeans in each bottle around the edges toward the top of the soil
4) Put netting around the top of the bottle, and hold down with a rubber band
5) Water the soybeans around 1tbs to 2tbs each day
6) measure how many soybeans sprouted in each bottle, and what part of the seed sprouted for qualitative data
7) As we continue this process for 10 days, record the process of germination in data table |
