Explore In class we have learned that a seed is a ripened ovule of a fertilized flower. The seed is also spread from a parent plant into the environment. After their dispersal the seeds stay inactive or dormant, until the environment is favorable for germination and growth. Once the conditions are favorable for germination and growth germination starts. The first step is imbibtion which occurs when the dry seed soaks up water. Then once the water is all soaked up the enzymes in the embryo activate which helps it store food that helps it grow. When the root sprouts it responds to gravity and starts growing downward. As the plant starts growing towards the sun and shedding the seed coat the roots and soot tips divide and differentiate. The stem then elongates and the roots grow deeper in a process called Primary Growth.
Research Question What are the best conditions for the germination of a seed?
Predictions If the plant gains more light, then the plant will germinate quicker.
Experimental Design #1.Assemble all materials and cut the water bottles in half #2. Add soil to the half of a bottle #3.Place seed in the soil #4.Add 1/4 cup of water #5.Place 2 of the samples in a dark, closed cabinet, and the other two in the light.
