I already knew that plants need sunlight, oxygen, and water to grow. In class we discovered that plants produce oxygen and sugar as a result of photosynthesis. I wonder how plants are affected by light and how they would grow without soil or water. |
Research Question |
What effect(s) do light and dark have on plants? The question fits what we know because we are learning about photosynthesis and studying plants. |
Predictions |
My prediction is that the leaves under light will float faster and the ones in darkness would float slower. |
Experimental Design |
Our plan was to do the leaf disk lab but change it up a bit. We used only two cups with six leaf disks in each cup. There was a drop of soap and baking soda in both of the cups. One cup was put under the light and one was put in a shelf under the table. We checked every 5 minutes for 20 minutes. |
Conclusion |
Plants go through photosynthesis faster under light. The light acts as the sun and allows the leaves to go through photosynthesis. In the dark, plants go through cellular respiration. The plants go through different processes in different environments and conditions. The leaves weren't able to undergo photosynthesis in the dark, which made them not be able to produce oxygen an float back up to the surface. |
