Explore Most of the trees we studied looked pretty healthy, sometimes despite having exterior damage like scratches on its trunk. The most severe damage seemed to be a lot of discoloration in the leaves that probably came from dehydration or lack of sun, which are extremely vital for a plant's life. The research questions that we might want to do have to do with the impact of the environment on the trees.
Research Question Are trees on private property healthier than those in city parks?
Predictions Trees planted on private property will be healthier than trees planted in city parks because private trees are less exposed to danger such as pests, dehydration, and man-made damage.
Experimental Design Our plan is to observe randomly selected trees in Southern Californian city parks and private property to see how damaged they are and use that to compare the healthiness of city park trees and private property trees. The two locations are independent variables and the damage on each tree are dependent variables. Using a scale of no damage to high damage, we will measure how much damage we observe on each tree by writing them down and calculating the average for the two areas.
