We've learned so far that monocot plants have one cotyledon and dicot plants have two cotyledons. Dicots have more rounded leaves, with web like patterns, while monocot leaves are more blade like with one straight line. Monocots and dicots are both angeosperms. Dicot plants have a taproot system, and monocot plants have a fibrous root system. Dicot flowers usually come in four or five sets of petals, and monocots come in groups of three petals. |
Research Question |
Question: If we use different types of liquids, which plant will grow the tallest? |
Predictions |
If we water our buckwheat and nasturtium with Gatorade and fertilizer then the fertilizer would grow a lot faster than the Gatorade plants, and the plants with water would grow normally. |
Experimental Design |
1. Gather materials
2. Place equal amount soil in six of the same sized pots
3. Put four seeds in each pot ¾ inches deep
4. First water one of the nasturtium pots with 10 milliliters of water, and one pot of buckwheat with 10 milliliters water.
5. Second, water your second pot of nasturtium with Gatorade, and your second pot of buckwheat with Gatorade. (10 milliliters)
6. Third, water the last two pots of nasturtium and buckwheat with 10 millilieters of fertilizer mixture
7. Place in sun to set overnight. (all of the pots)
8. Each day measure in centimeters and record how tall the plant has grown
9. Repeat steps 4-8 for two weeks
10. ALSO add the Gatorade and fertilizer mixture every other day and in between days add 10 milliliters of water. |
