  • Time Zone
    Pacific

  • Organization
    University of California - Merced

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I studied how plants react and respond when they are infected with pathogens, such as viruses. i looked at the mechanisms plants have to fight off different types of pathogens so that they are not killed.
currently, i study how undergraduate students best learn in science classes and how we can support college students in stem majors.

  • Profile Question 1
What is the coolest thing you have discovered or learned about plants?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
That they have very robust defense responses to viruses and other pathogens!

  • Profile Question 2
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
Be as open as possible to different opportunities. It is easy to pick a single track or idea and run with it, but there are so many types of science to study, and then so many different career paths after you graduate. It is good to focus, but also good to check in with yourself to make sure that you are still on the right path for you.

  • Profile Question 3
What was the first science experiment you ever designed? How did it turn out?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
The very first science experiment I designed was in 4th grade. My family had just gotten a new puppy and so for my science fair project I tested different methods for removing urine stains from rugs. It turned out pretty well-we found a best way and then could use that around the house while potty training our puppy.

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?
