It seems that ryegrass doesn't like sand as soil, right?

One thing you can do is look at the seeds you planted in the pot with sand. Sometimes, plantlets develop really small roots and hypocotyl but they are aborted right after germination. I would take a picture showing three plants (one representative of each treatment) next to a ruler to show the differences in size. This will be a good picture to show along with a figure with the averaged height values for each treatment.

Once you make the height measurements, take notes and more pics to better support the description of the materials and methods. Also let me know if you need help with average and standard deviation estimations. (Here is a good educational video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiq7qLTNZeU)

That sounds like a plan. I really like the idea of your irrigated planters, it is a good way to reuse plastic!!

 

Another important controlled variables could be the distance to the source of light (windows, in a greenhouse, or lamps, in a growth chamber) or the humidity of the room. These are the main variables we usually modify when we grow plant in controlled environments.
