Info

Explore Plants need light to do photosythesis, they also need water adn carbon dioxide. When plants do photosythesis they release oxygen, they produce glucose that they use as food
Research Question How will light and dark enviroments affect the pH of water with elodea in it?
Predictions The dark environment will have a lower pH than the light environment
Experimental Design Our plan is to put the elodea in to 4 test tubes, two in the dark and two in the light. One will be wraped in foil and the other one will be put under a lamp. We will put phenol red into the test tube to see if the pH changes. Our control would be a test tube of water with no elodea in it. We...
Conclusion When the elodea is put into a dark environment it becomes more acidic because the plant is not doing phototsythesis and taking up the carbon dioxide, it is only releasing it. The carbon dioxide it the water makes it more acidic. When the elodea was put in the light it becomes less acidic because...
About this Project I was impressed by this team answering all of the questions asked by the mentor! Their mentor always posted a new question pertaining to their research, and the team took to the time to reply to all questions! -- Devani Jolman, Liaison

Updates

Get to know your team’s scientist mentor, who will encourage and guide you through the scientific process of discovery. The more you share your ideas and research info, the more your mentor can help. You may also hear from a scientist mentor liaison who will be helping all the teams in your class.

Hi everyone!

Congratulations on completing your projects! I was able to look through your presentations, and I am impressed by the interesting things this class was able to investigate. You should be proud of yourselves. Hopefully, you were able to communicate with your scientist mentor and learn some things about the scientific process and scientists in general!

Something to think about - scientists are always looking forward to their next project. Usually, we come up with new questions to investigate based on the results of older projects! It is the beauty of science - we never run out of questions. So, be a scientist! If you had to come up with a new question or project based on the results of your experiment, what would it be?

Thank you for all of your hard work! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Holiday season.

-Devani

Nice photos team. What role does the CO2 play in the processes of photosynthesis and respiration in Elodea?

Thanks for the explanation Alexander. What is the chemical process by which CO2 actually increases the acidity of the water? And have you observed any specific pH changes in your experiments yet?

    Alexander
    said

When CO2 is in water it reacts with the water to become carbonic acid which makes the water more acidic. We have not observed and changes in pH yet.

Hello PlantingScientists. How are you all doing? Nice updates to the page here. What is your rationale for the prediction that the dark environment will have a lower pH than the light environment?

    Alexander
    said

Since there is resperation but no photosythesis in the dark there will be more carbon dioxide causing the water to have a lower pH

Hello, my name in Alexander. So far we have learned about how different colors of light affect photosythesis and how different amounts of carbon dioxide affect the rate of photosythesis

Hello, I am Jacob. I play football for Morgantown High. I enjoy being outdoors and doing outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. I have learned in Biology class so far about photosynthesis and how the different colors affect photosynthesis.

Hi Jacob. Photosynthesis and plants are so important. Did you eat today? Did you breathe today?
