    I am interested in studying proteins. My current project is centered on spaceflight proteomics experiment that compares the proteins found in seedlings grown in space compared to Earth. The objective is to identify components of signal transduction in gravitropism. The organism of my research is Arabidopsis thaliana which is also the model organism for plant biology.

    When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

    I have been fascinated by plants and molecular biology ever since high school. That was the reason I chose to major in biotechnology in college. After college though I took a break from studying biology and worked in a non-bio field for a couple of years. The work experience gained through that job is invaluable but it also made me realize that my future is in a science career. After that break I started my graduate studies with renewed enthusiasm.

    What is best about being a scientist?

    The promise of working on something new. As a scientist, you face questions and challenges regarding your personal research topic everyday and you have to formulate a solution that works for you. Figuring out these answers is the best part about being a scientist to me.

    What is the coolest thing you have discovered or learned about plants?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
    Plants can regenerate into a whole new being from the tiniest tissue sample in appropriate media. This ability is missing in most of the other organisms we see around us. Apart from furnishing oxygen in the atmosphere as a by product of producing sugars for consumption, plants have also served as bioreactors of choice in producing medicines designed for treating certain chronic diseases. These are the coolest things I have learned about plants.

Hello Lisa,

You are right. The leaf disk from the standard size hole-punch had a surface area that can produce enough oxygen to make the disk of that particular size buoyant while the disk of larger size might not be able to rise up.
