  • Organization
    Central Michigan University

  • Employment Status

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I am interested in the Great Lakes coastal wetlands, specifically in water quality and the health of the Great Lakes. I study how wetlands provide nutrients for other organisms, especially benthic algae, and how those interactions can affect the surrounding ecosystem.

  • Profile Question 1
What lessons have you learned in your career about how science works?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
I have learned that science is unpredictable. That in order to be successful, you might fail and get frustrated, but then learn through your mistakes to discover significant answers to your research. You must never give up.

  • Profile Question 2
What was the first science experiment you ever designed? How did it turn out?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
The first science experiment I ever designed involved electricity and a lemon. I wanted to observe if a lemon could conduct its own electricity through its sourness. I hypothesized the more sour a lemon was, the more electricity it would produce. I tested my hypothesis and learned that a lemon can produce electricity, but that the sourness intensity did not make a difference.

  • Profile Question 3
What is a typical day like for you?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
A typical day involves me going to class, Wetland Plants, early in the morning. Once I am finished with my class, I head back to my lab to work on water chemistry, soil ashing, filtering nutrients, data entry, and etc. I work with lots of different samples which has helped me broaden my interests in the science community.

I predict that the rubbing alcohol will extract the green from the leaves! What were your results?

That is an awesome experiment! It sounds like the amount of plant pigments (chlorophyll) may have determined your results!
