    My research focuses on how plants deal with stressful conditions from salt to nutrient deficiencies to limited light to predation. Responses can range in their scope and focus and my interests span a range of levels from molecular to organismal to ecosystem.

    What is your favorite plant? Why?

    Redwood tree. Majestic and calm, they not only epitomize resilience with their ability to survive tough challenges, but they also work together to hold each other up. What a great role model for us all!

    What is tough about being a scientist?

    Most of science is trying to figure out the unknown....which means a lot of times things don't work! The tough part of being a scientist is learning to see each "failure" as a learning experience and keep trying!

    Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

    I always thought nature and the outdoors were pretty cool, but I had NO idea how amazing the small stuff inside was. Learning about cells and the molecular workings inside blew me away. The more you learn, the more awesome and amazing you realize our world is!
