  What is a typical day like for you?

  On a day I like best, I work in the greenhouse with others on hand-pollinations and plant care, and maybe also do some experiments with ants and caterpillars in our captive ant colonies. I also will spend a few hours working on data analyses and/or writing - sometimes there is more editing and reviewing of other people's work. On a teaching day I do fewer of these other things, and for less time, but enjoy the interactions with students.

  When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  I was a double major, Botany and English - applied to medical school, and got in - but realized I love being outside and enjoyed all the field courses and outdoor research experiences I had before. That helped me decide to become a plant ecologist.

Greetings Team! Nice to hear from Megan, and looking forward to interacting with all of you on line. I am a professor at Florida International University, a big state university in the busy tropical paradise of Miami. I am a botanist, plant ecologist, teacher, researcher, gardener, environmentalist, and also love art, music, and animals. The cat is a girl, her name is Frody, we also live with her twin brother Burrow who is all striped. They are 13 years old, 14 in March.
