  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    University of Michigan

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
Why do different plants have different leaf shapes? To help find answers, much of my research involves creating new tools to measure leaf shape using machine learning and AI.

  • Profile Question 1
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
My brain is constantly flooded with questions about how the natural world functions. As a scientist, I have the freedom to follow these questions wherever they lead!

  • Profile Question 2
What is tough about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
Scientists have so many different responsibilities! Beyond conducting experiments and research, they often have to juggle grant writing, publishing papers, attending conferences, and teaching or mentoring younger researchers. Furthermore, they face the challenge of constantly staying updated in their rapidly evolving fields. Being a scientist also means embracing uncertainty. Not every hypothesis will be correct, and not every experiment will yield the expected results. This requires resilience, as well as the ability to learn from failures and setbacks. On top of all this, scientists must communicate their findings effectively, bridging the gap between complex scientific jargon and accessible language for the public. It's a demanding role, but the pursuit of knowledge and the potential for discovery make it all worthwhile!

  • Profile Question 3
What lessons have you learned in your career about how science works?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
One vital takeaway I've gathered is that just because a fact is in a textbook or research paper, it doesn't mean that the topic is fully explored. Surprisingly, many concepts we learn about in high school or college are still debated and studied by scientists. There's always something new to learn!

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?
