    I study the relationship between plants and people and how that relationship has changed throughout history. using a combination of historical, field, lab, and museum research.

    What is your favorite plant? Why?

    My favorite plant is the Scarlet Oak! It is a large tree that grows in the Eastern United States and has beautiful, glossy green leaves that turn bright red in the fall.

    What lessons have you learned in your career about how science works?

    Science is all about asking questions! No matter where you are (from forests to the middle of a city), there is always a story behind how and why plants grow in different areas. Even if you can't come up with all of the answers, start thinking about what might be going on and ask questions about what you are seeing.

    What is best about being a scientist?

    My favorite part about being a scientist is being able to ask a question and take the time to figure out an answer, whether it is just reading about a subject or making new discoveries myself.
