Describe your teaching experience and interests in a brief public biography (200 words)
I began teaching as an alternate route candidate in an inner city school district known as East Orange, NJ when I finished college. In 2013 I began working in Teaneck, NJ. During my time as an educator, I have worked with students of many different abilities. I work hard to provide all students with opportunities for learning science using a constructivist approach. Students perform labs to learn scientific concepts and develop an understanding of the natural world through hands-on learning experiences. We use scientific tools to gather data and create visuals using the information collected. In our earth science unit, a project I do with students that is extensive is one in which we record current earthquake data using the USGS website then use the information to draw conclusions about where earthquakes occur in the world. Students learn about Earth's layers and the energy within it. Students build "earthquake resistant" structures and learn a lot about Earth's structure as well as man-made structures. This year I am teaching an advanced course in grades seven and eight. I think this would help me learn how to guide my students to develop their own learning path using scientific concepts.
