  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    Nazareth University

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I study plants and their pollinators. Specifically my research deals with a special mode of plant reproduction where plants switch their sexual expression every day to avoid self-pollinating.

  • Profile Question 1
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
I started enjoying science in high school, and became a scientific researcher during college in 2009. I consider the beginning of my career as a scientist as when I started doing research with my undergraduate advisor. To be honest, I went into science because I wasn't sure what else I wanted to do but I'm glad I tried it out. It turned out to be a great passion of mine and I really enjoy making new discoveries in science as a career.

  • Profile Question 2
What is tough about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
The toughest part of being a scientist is also the most gratifying. A lot of the work I do doesn't have a lot of background information. So, everything I do is hard to start because there isn't a lot of information to build off of. However, that's what makes the job so cool in the first place. It makes me feel like an explorer discovering new worlds!

  • Profile Question 3
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
My favorite plant is either 1. Canella winterana (the plant I study for my research, or 2.) Amorphophallus titanum (the corpse flower). Canella has a really cool breeding system wherein it changes its sexual expression every 24 hours- one day it accepts pollen and another day it releases pollen. This type of breeding is very rare and there's not a lot known about how it functions. The corpse flower can take more than 10 years to produce a flower but when it does it's absolutely HUGE! So cool.

  • In addition to English, I am comfortable communicating with students in the following languages:
    None of the Above

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?
    1
