Profile

  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    Truman State University

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I am an agricultural science major currently in my senior year of undergrad with a focus on soil health, I have experience in both domestic and commercial growing operations. My specialty is plant agriculture specifically in greenhouse settings.

  • Profile Question 1
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
Garlic, The garlic plant is one that propagates itself and has a plethora of uses in both culinary and educational fields. While it is a cool-season crop it also has a growing season through the summer which while is dramatically reduced as opposed to its overwinter counterpart allows it to nearly always be in production.

  • Profile Question 2
Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
High school is where my love of biological science really began. Between my actual biology classes, a research expedition into the Grand Teton Mountains to study the mating habits of the sagebrush cricket, and my first real exposure to greenhouse growing operations, my four years in high school provided me ample exposure to the biological sciences which only became more cemented as I entered college for agriculture.

  • Profile Question 3
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
Science is not a perfect science. It's silly I know, but one of the best lessons I have learned or rather had to unlearn is that the practice we call science is not a set in stone method, while ideas like the scientific method exist, they cannot by themselves produce anything, and the most certainly cannot produce anything without failing at least a few times. Now that I am preparing to enter a career, or even just going to graduate program it is important to remind yourself that these institutions are not perfect, and are prone to being wrong. I find comfort in this as it means that since we're still getting things wrong, we still have new ideas to discover, new ground to break, and new ways to contribute.

  • In addition to English, I am comfortable communicating with students in the following languages:
    (not set)

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?
