  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
Plant Pathology, Climate change, microbiology, genetics, ethnobotany, mycology, and molecular interactions

  • Profile Question 1
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
My favorite plant is the desert rose. I love the beauty of the blossoms in contrast to the starkness of the stem. The best part about the plant is its ability to survive in an area where you rarely see such delicate flowers. I find that it highlights the ability of plants to adapt to their environments and thrive in areas of difficulty.

  • Profile Question 2
Can you share a funny/interesting lab or field story?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
I was working on a high tunnel project that involved the inoculation of tomatoes with powdery mildew. We had already completed one trial in the Fall that went perfectly well and we began another trial in the Spring. We did not take into account that the Spring climate in Kentucky is ideal for powdery mildew and ended up spreading the disease onto every tomato at the research station. The plants looked like they had been spray painted white. It was a good object lesson as to how the environment affects the plant-pathogen interaction and the importance of disease containment.

  • Profile Question 3
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
I think the best thing about my job is the constant excitement about finding new things and the ability to change direction. Research is probably best at showing me that I do not know everything and that I am wrong a lot, but it satisfies this drive to learn more about how things work. Going into work every day with the possibility of learning something previously unknown is invigorating and keeps me passionate about Plant Pathology.

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?

Okay Jackson, so a line graph shows timelines really well. If one of your variables was time this is a good graph type to use. What are your data points going to be in the graph (i.e. what are your axis labels)?

Alrighty, that is a good start, Hank. Just remember that we can never prove a hypothesis, we can only support or disprove the hypothesis. You created a hypothesis at the beginning of the experiment and now you need to analyze your results. Your…

I enjoy reading the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. He wrote the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. He was known to spend hours looking at a single flower in a garden, just admiring its beauty. I aspire to that type of contentment with my time.
