  As a human ecologist and ethnobiologist, I study how people use plants and animals within their food systems. I work with farmers in the mountains of Ethiopia and Native American communities in the northern Great Plains of the USA.

  What is your favorite plant? Why?

  My favorite plant is Juneberry, also known as shadbush, service berry or Saskatoon berry. The scientific name is Amelanchier alnifolia. It is one of the most delicious berries, sweet and with a subtle hint of almond. It is also an important seasonal cue, because when it blooms, the shad are running in the rivers.

Dear team,

It's great to hear that you've started your experiment and that you've started to collect data. Remember that while you are collecting data about the plant height and the number of leaves, you should also take note of any other interesting changes. Sometimes we see something that we didn't expect, and it's important to document those so we might include them in our analysis. For example, what if the leaves under one of your lights turns a different color or grow at a different angle than the others?
