  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
My research interests revolve around understanding what makes plants sick, and what we can do to try to prevent this from happening. I work on projects aimed at helping us predict when and how a fungus called powdery mildew will progress through its life cycle and infect a wide variety of plants, including my plant of focus, hops. Specific aspects of interest include population biology of the pathogen, pathogen resistance to varying hop varieties and varying fungicides, and finally the sexual stage of the fungus and the role this stage plays in the disease cycle.

  • Profile Question 1
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
I love learning. And as a scientist you get to ask questions about cool things in nature and then design experiments to figure out the answer! I also believe that scientists have an amazing opportunity to do research that then can help the rest of the people on earth live better lives.

  • Profile Question 2
What is tough about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
An experiment that you design will not always work the first time, or at all. You can't get down on your self when things aren't going as planned, and it is super important to make sure you learn from the experiments that don't work so that you can make sure the ones you do in the future are even better.

  • Profile Question 3
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
Be willing to explore types of science that you don't know much about or don't think you'd like. I never would have thought I would want to be a plant biologist until I did a summer internship where I was actually doing this type of science, and then I fell in love with it!

Good morning team!

Those are great ideas for things to document as the plants grow! I would consider all of those items (color change, how green they appear, "growth" of the leaves, and how full the plant looks to all fall in to a…
