  • Research Interests (300 words)
I am interested in plant ecology and evolutionary biology. My research seeks to examine species' distribution patterns and interactions among populations. Basically, I want to know why plants grow where they do and how populations are interacting with each other to drive the patterns we see today. I use a combination of field, molecular, and computational modeling approaches to address my research questions. To date, my work has focused predominantly on the amazing plant group, ferns.

  • Do you have previous experience in mentorship or educational outreach? Please list here (200 words)
Yes, during my time as a graduate student I mentored undergraduates as they assisted me with my research. Also, as a postdoctoral researcher, I mentor a number of undergraduate students in our lab to complete a variety of projects. I also have extensive outreach experience, developing projects and teaching various botanical concepts to middle school, high school, and undergraduate students, and individuals participating in a master naturalist program.

  • Which of the following best describes your career stage?
    Early Career

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
My favorite plant is actually a group of plants, ferns. Its too difficult to select a single species in my opinion, because I love so many of them! Ferns are fascinating because of their ecology (interaction with the environment), life cycle (gametophytes and sporophytes), and different growth habits (epiphytic and terrestrial). Ferns are a very old group of plants, and I think there is a lot we can learn about how they faced environmental changes in the past to help predict how plants will respond to global climate change.

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
I decided to go in to a science career when I found out that I love teaching. I was a senior in undergrad and I had the opportunity to serve as an undergraduate teaching assistant for a plant and soil science class. The summer before I had served as an intern at the Missouri Botanical Garden, and I realized that while I loved being outside and maintaining the garden, I wasn't being challenged enough, I wanted to learn more! The teaching opportunity opened my eyes to the possibility of a career in academia, where I would be challenged and could share my passion for plants every day!

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
If you had told me when I was in high school that I would end up getting my PhD in plant ecology and evolutionary biology I don't think I would have believed you. To be completely honest, as a high school student I loved being outside and I loved the environment, but I never got super excited about going to biology class. When I started undergrad, I thought I wanted to be an environmental lawyer, but during my sophomore year I took a dendrology class, meaning that I learned how to identify trees, and I fell in love with plants! So, for those of you that may think biology isn't your thing, you never know where your future will take you!

Hi team! Great work! One quick question, will you please modify the word document you uploaded to only reflect the first initial of your last name? Thank you!

Interesting results team! I'm just curious, but it looks like there are two sets of data here showing different time intervals. Can you explain that a little bit for me?

Whoa, interesting! What does your team think will happen? Can you guess on an order in which photosynthesis will perform from the best to the worst?
