  In my research, I ask questions related to ecological processes and address them by studying plant physiology. I am interested in how human activities can affect plant and ecosystem health. In particular, I study nutrient cycling, with an emphasis on calcium.

Sounds like the beginnings of a great experiment. Think carefully about factors you need to control. For example, how do you limit the light received by your "dark" treatment when you take your measurements?

Sounds like the beginnings of a great experiment. Think carefully about factors you need to control. For example, how do you limit the light received by your "dark" treatment when you take your measurements?

 

Might it be wise to include more than one plant in each treatment, or are there logistical reasons that you can't do that?

 

Do you expect to see growth differences after only one week? Can you think of a reason that you might see more growth in plants that don't receive the light they need? Think, for example, about plants growing on a windowsill, that grow towards the window because the room light is not adequate.

 

Can you think of a more direct measurement of photosynthesis (rather than an indirect measurement such as plant growth)?

You have some pretty compelling results! What is your interpretation of your data? What type of gas are teh bubbles that caused the disks to float?

Hi team! I'm looking forward to working with you on your plant research project. Different color lights are indeed likely to influence plant growth. What colors are you considering? What role might these different colors play in plant growth? What are your reasons for considering colors of light?

Looks like you all are outdoorsy and athletic. I too love to play outside, which is probably the reason I love biology so much. I am a biology professor at Berry College, in Rome, GA. I work on various research projects, but almost all of my projects relate to plant biology - either physiological plant ecology or plant conservation. I also have worked on some projects that focus on the conservation of cave ecosystems. All of my research projects have undergraduate college students as research assistants. They get some terrific professional experience working on research projects.
