  My research focuses on the Hawaiian endemic members of the genus Polyscias (Araliaceae). This group only occurs in Hawaii and many of the species are quite rare-several are federally listed endangered species. I am interested in how the species found only on the island of Kauai are related to one another.

  Hesperomannia sweyzei, it is a such a charismatic plant and its lineage is quite interesting.

  Can you share a funny/interesting lab or field story?

  I was conducting field work on Mt. Wai'ale'ale (one of the wettest spots on earth) with officials from the State of Hawai'i. It was horizontal rain, the soles came off my shoes and my feet were soaked and I was freezing. We had been looking for one of the species that I study for about a week with no success. It was critical to get samples from this site because it is habitat from which this species was first described. Thinking that the whole trip was a bust were about to turn around. Just then, the clouds parted and there were the trees we needed.
