  I am interested in plant conservation and figuring out how to protect plants from development, changes in global climate, and other destructive activities of people. I enjoy studying all plants, from moss to cordgrass, and finding out why there are so many different species of plants today.

  I decided to go into a science career because only through science do people discover and learn about what makes the Earth what it is, not just what people think about. My career in Biology has reminded me every day of all the great things about this planet, all the different living things that coexist, and my place among them.

  What is the coolest thing you have discovered or learned about plants?

  The coolest thing about plants is that the United States is the home to both the largest organism AND the oldest organism, and both these organisms are plants! The giant sequoia tree is the largest (16 times the size of a blue whale), and the bristlecone pine tree is the oldest (over 5,064 years old)!

I think sunflowers are very interesting because how they move their flower heads to face the sun as the sun moves over the course of the day! And Heliconia flowers all look fantastic to me, from many different species, wether they grow upward or hang and grow downward.

My favorite plant is the bristlecone pine tree. They are the oldest individual plants (3,000 to 5,000 year old trees), and the way their trunks swirl make them look dynamic and alive!

Hello! I am Mr. Gunner, and I will be your scientist mentor for this project. I am excited to be working with you! Feel free to ask me questions and update me on whatever steps you are working on, so I can help.

I work outdoors in the San Francisco bay area, studying and protecting plants that grow in marshes. I think plants are awesome. Plants are our food, shelter, clothing, medicine, and they also look cool and do amazing things!
