  • Employment Status
    University / College Graduate Student

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I am studying the endoplasmic reticulum stress mediated responses in model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. I am trying to understand the regulatory mechanisms of plants, how they defend themselves upon different biotic and abiotic stress.

  • Do you have previous experience in mentorship or educational outreach? Please list here (200 words)
I am mentoring three undergraduate students and two high school students till now. Two of them working on independent project now (one undergraduate and one high school). One of my undergraduate mentee received 3rd place on poster presentation, on SS-ASPB-2019 annual meeting.

  • Which of the following best describes your career stage?
    Graduate Student

  • Profile Question 1
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
You can work on exciting things, particularly of your own interest. You can work all day all night. You can teach other people who are excited to learn/discover new things.

  • Profile Question 2
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
When I was in my 4th grade, my uncle showed me a succulent which can regenerate from its leaves, which makes me interested in plant science. During my undergraduate studies (which was in my home country, Bangladesh) I realized our planet need more plant scientist to feed the future population and decided to be a researcher.

  • Profile Question 3
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
Arabidopsis is my favorite plant. It has a short life cycle and I can finish my experiments within 6 weeks. Also there's a lot of information available for Arabidopsis which is very helpful for my projects.

Hi Varsha and Skylar,

What was the control (probably tap water?) and treatment (different pH?)? Can you clarify that? Also did you put both the treatment groups same amount of water to start with?
