Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
My research focuses on plant nutrition. Iron is necessary for photosynthesis, respiration, and clearing out reactive oxygen species which can damage the cells. When the plant can't get enough iron, some of these pathways are cannot function normally. So, I work specifically on how plants respond to iron deficiency in the leaf. Iron is also highly important for human health, so understanding how plants can deal with iron deficiency can help to improve plants for human nutrition.

  • Profile Question 1
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
My favorite plant is the pecan tree because it was the first plant I did research on. Fun fact: it takes a pecan tree 14 years before it can make any pecan nuts.

  • Profile Question 2
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
If you're interested in a career in science, I suggest trying to get some hands on experience in a research lab, biotechnology lab, or other areas of science so you can get a good idea of what each area entails. It's easier to experience how different scientific careers work than it is to describe how they work.

Hi Team,

How did your presentation go? What would your "next steps" be if you were to carry this research further?

Hi Team,

How did your presentation go? The conclusions and powerpoint looked great. What would your "next steps" be if you were to carry this research further?

Hi Team,

I hope your presentation preparation is going well. Why do you think the UV light did not give you any floating leaves? Is there a reason you can think of as to why a UV light would be less efficient for photosynthesis?
