Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
My favorite plant is called Christmas fern, it’s scientific name is Polystichum acrostichoides. It is my favorite because it grows throughout the winter even in places where it snows. Even more interesting is that it becomes flat against the ground in the winter. My first major research project was observing this behavior and figuring out why the fern does this.
Profile Question 2
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?
Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
Deciding to go into science has been an ongoing process since late middle school. I grew up on a farm and developed an interest in understanding how plants and animals worked. I was fortunate to have a great biology teacher in high school who lead me to love plants. Without this teacher and other mentors, I would not have realized I could make a career out of plants and doing my own research. I like working in science because I get to investigate how things work and help myself and others understand the plants around us.
Profile Question 3
What is tough about being a scientist?
Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
The most difficult part of being science for me is picking one project to work on. There are so many interesting possibilities and questions but I only have enough time and money to do so many things. Deciding what to pursue first has been a big challenge for me in graduate school, but it is also nice to realize how many things haven’t been figured out yet.
