Our Outcomes
Planting Science provides an excellent opportunity for my 7th grade students to collaborate and use the investigative process. If given this opportunity, students from DeWitt Middle School will experience not only a hands-on inquiry based project but they will also improve on their communication skills by working with a team, sharing their process with a scientist and presenting their results. Given a real-word scenario, starting a sprout farm, students dive into an investigation to promote seed germination. As a science teacher, I have not found another project that mimics the work of scientists as well as this. And I cannot think of a better way to motivate students into the world of science! There are two other pieces that I, as a teacher, find valuable. First, as we investigate seed germination, my students learn about living things and the process they go through in order to get the energy they need to survive. Students learn about what is required for something to be considered living, photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Finally, and subtly, but perhaps most importantly, Planting Science?€™s scientists represent the wide range of people who can be scientists. And I am grateful for this opportunity for my students to see those people!
