Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Performance Expectations

The performance expectations for the Tree-mendous Benefits of Seeds module are:

5-LS1-1 5-LS2-1 MS-LS1-4
MS-LS1-5 MS-LS1-6 MS-LS2-1
MS-LS2-3 HS-LS1-4 HS-LS1-5

A 2-week investigation for grades 6-12.

This investigation introduces students to the concept of making detailed observations - a critical component of thorough scientific study. Students will gather observations of trees in their immediate environment and describe the roles they play in the landscape and environment. Are the trees healthy, diseased, stressed, declining? If so, what could this mean for the landscape around them?

This module can be used as a stand-alone module or as an introduction to one of the following investigation themes:

The Tree-mendous Benefits of Seeds Materials:

Essential Inquiry Questions:

  • What role do trees play in supporting life on Earth?
  • What constitutes evidence?

  • How do the group’s data fit into its own model of tree growth and function?
  • What role does the environment play (biotic and abiotic) in tree health and growth?
