Say aloe to my little friend

Project by group sjalodesfall2017

Explore We know that plants release oxygen and we take in oxygen and release CO2 for the plants to then take in. Plants need water and sunlight to grow (sunlight provides Energy for photosynthesis)
Research Question Does the color of the spinach leaves affect the rate at which photosynthesis takes place? We came up with this question from our teacher lead class discussions, and this fits with what we are learning, as we are learning about different factors that increase, slow down, or limit photosynthesis.
Predictions We predict that the green leaf disks will have the most disks floating at the end, as they will undergo photosynthesis the quickest compared to the purple and yellow leaves.
Experimental Design We will keep the size of the leaf disks, the amount of light, and the type of water with some baking soda in it the same. These will be our constants. We then separate the leaf disks into 3 groups (green, purple, and a mix of the two) and perform the adequate steps to get them to sink, like using a plunger thing to squeeze out the air bubbles. We then placed the different groups into separate cups of baking soda solution.
Conclusion Our results didn't support our hypothesis. Unfortunately, The baking soda didn't work because the water became too buoyant and our leaf disks never sank. So, we tried the experiment again. However, this time not all the leaf disks went to the top. In conclusion, we do not know what happens when the color of a leaf is changed, but we do know, from class, that color is not a variable in photosynthesis.
