Like Plants, We Don't Leaf You

Explore From outside experiences, it is known that plants need many different factors to grow. Daylight and water are two major outside sources needed for most plant growth. Other outside sources such as wind and different weather conditions can also influence plant growth. The time of year that plants...
Research Question What do we want to test or study? How did we come up with the question(s). How does the question fit what we know about the topic?
Predictions What are the possible outcomes of our study given the variables we are working with? What is our explanation for why and how we think this will happen?
Experimental Design What is our plan? Be sure to include enough detail that another group can replicate our experiment. What variables will we test? What variables will we measure and observe? What variables will we keep constant? How will we record our data?
Conclusion What claim can we make from our experiment? What are possible explanations for our results? How do the data we collected and our reasoning with scientific ideas support our claim? What future experiments could be done to expand on the results of this experiment?

Hello everyone. I had a great time talking to you and hearing your questions! I just looked over your final analysis document. You guys talked about the different traits (phenotypes) you saw and if they were controlled by genes (leaf and stem color) or by the environment (hairiness of the leaves). As you guys said, even if the environment has a large effect, like leaf hairiness, there still needs to be genes to encode for leaf hairs. The environment acts on the genes. Another important thing to think about is how you can improve the experiment if you did it again. Would you add more replicates or build a better barrier against the wind? Scientists continually create better experiment setups to make sure their data is accurate and precise. Overall, great job with you experiment and your analysis!

Research Question: How does wind affect plant hairiness?

We came up with the question together as a class by observing the different qualities of the plants that appeared as they grew and what might have affected the outcome of those phenotypes. What we know about the topic is that genotypes play a big role in the outcome of the phenotypes by determining what qualities the plants will have based on the genetic combination of the parent plants. Our question, however, is whether or not the environment (in our case, wind) will affect the phenotype as well.
